Miniature Guitar using recycled cardboard
Miniature Guitar
Made for recycled cardboard
I was asked to make a special 60th birthday card for a colleagues wife. She plays bass guitar in a band and likes travelling, flowers and hedgehogs. After a bit of research I discovered that Gibson released a new model of bass guitar in 1961 the year she was born. I thought a guitar case would make a great 3 d card and decided to have a go at making a model guitar to put in it. YouTube provided lots of tutorials on making cardboard guitars. After getting some ideas I made a start.
The guitar case was made from cardboard from an Amazon box. I covered the outside with a leather look paper and the inside with flowered paper. I made personalised stickers to decorate the outside of the case. One is the name of the band she plays in. I even got a little hedgehog on there for her.
Initially I printed out some front and back views of the guitar to use as a template. I cut out the body of the guitar from several layers of cardboard from large cat food boxes as I have a plentiful supply of these. I glued the layers together then used lightweight paper clay to fill in and round the edges. This worked reasonably well but needed a lot of sanding to smooth it. If making again I would overfill with the clay to be able to sand it back more to get a better finish.
I painted the body with a mahogany acrylic paint then varnished it. The fittings are made of cardboard. The silver knobs are large half pearl embellishments.
The neck was cut out using the printout of the guitar as a template again. I scored a piece of card the length of the neck and curved this to create the round back of the neck. The neck and head are covered in coloured paper rather than painted.. The fingerboard is black cardboard. The frets are thin strips of silver card. The pegs were made from pieces of a wooden skewer painted silver. The pegs buttons are made from lightweight paper clay.
Lastly I used silver thread to make the guitar strings.
