Dementor shadow box card.

I love crafting and Harry Potter so am currently busy with Harry Potter related makes. I have the Harry Potter dies and wanted to start using these.  I have used the scene from the 3rd Harry Potter movie where the dementors are on guard outside Hogwarts as inspiration for this shadow box / tunnel card.

To make this project I used:

Dementor die
Hogwarts castle circular die
Do crafts build a scene spooky graveyard dies
A very old worn well read copy of Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban - I used page 72
Black / grey cardstock 30cm X 30 cm to make the shadow box
Three 6 x 6 papers ( I used Mr smiths Workshop papers as these are dark and grungy)
Three 6 x 6" pieces of black card stock.
Scraps of black card
Distress ink - pumice stone
Gold metallic guilding wax
Denim blue and buttercup promarkers.
1" diameter circle die or punch

I initially make a shadow box from a piece of 216g 30cm x 30cm card.  For small project you do not want cardstock which is too heavyweight as it is not as easy to fold and bend into shape.

I will do a separate blog on how to make the shadow box.

There are a lot of visual guides on how to make this type of frame on youtube if you would find this easier to follow!

Once your frame is made you can make the tunnel layers.

I use a relevant page from an old worn Harry Potter book to create the background sky.  It is coloured with a denim blue promarker. and then glued onto the inside of the frame.  I cut a 1" circle from a blank page in the Harry Potter book and coloured this with a buttercup promarker to make a moon and positioned it on the sky behind the castle.  If you dont have a very old book you can cut up you could ink a nights sky or use a piece of coloured paper stock.

I then cut out my layers.  I start with the biggest aperture first so I can center and position the decreasing sized apertures correctly.  I used 6 x 6" paper glued onto black cardstock to make it sturdy enough for the project.  Once cut I used pumice stone distress ink around the edges of the aperture to slightly darken them.

I cut out a silhouette of Hogwarts castle from black card stock using a die and fussy cut it away from the frame and moon.  I fussy cut a second piece of card of the cliff edge and glued this on to give some more depth to the project.  I used gold metallic gilding wax to highlight the castle and give it character.

I then used foam tape behind my tunnel layers and glued each layer in turn onto the frame as shown.  I tend to use alot of the foam tape on the base layer as this has to support the other layers.

I cut out the dementor out of some grey card stock and used black soot distress ink to shade it as shown.  I attached the dementor using a zigzag cardboard spring so it could be supported over the middle of the tunnel in front of the castle and then glued the edges of the dementors robe to the frame.  I cut out the chapter title from the book, distressed it  and framed this on a piece of black card with some guilding wax around its edges.  This was stuck to the top of the frame with foam pads.

I hope you like my card and are inspired to make your own dementor themed project.  It could be made using a concertina mechanism at each side so it can be folded flat for postage.

In my next blog I will provide the instructions to make a shadow box card with Harrys stag patronus or Snapes doe patronus.
